Rotorua needs heroes and heroines

“If you want peace, you’ll have to fight for it”
.
“Huh?”
.
“’Fraid so. You’ve got all these rights, see, mountains of them! Heaps of people feel like you do, so many of them that we have laws and bylaws giving you legal rights against all sorts of neighbour abuse, but some of your neighbours just aren’t respecting them. So if you want your right to the quiet enjoyment of your own home, for example, you’re going to have to fight for it. Take that yahoo who keeps annoying you with his loud stereo. Well you’ve got a right to peace in your home, and he hasn’t got a right to play his music so loud it annoys the neighbours.”
.
“Well why does he do it then? Why can’t I have what I’m entitled to without fighting for it. Why doesn’t he just obey the rules without me doing anything about it?”
.
“Because he just doesn’t care about you. And he doesn’t care about the rules. And if nobody stops him, he’ll go on playing loud music as long and as often as he wants to.”
,
“Well then, why do I have to do something about it? What about the other neighbours, they’re annoyed too.”
.
“You can’t wait for them to do something. They might not! They might be too afraid, or too stressed, or too busy, or have any number of other reasons. On the other hand, if you do something, you might encourage people all around to join you. You will be doing a good deed not only for yourself but also for your society, and helping your community to move towards a better quality of life for everyone, while also helping to educate the noisy people to become more responsible and hopefully more caring citizens. Goodness is a very wonderful and powerful virtue and if you follow through your good desires for a better quality of life in a good and lawful way, you will help join all the decent and morally responsible citizens together to eventually assist your community become a lovely and pleasant place to live in.”
.
“Okay then, where do I start?”
.
“You could find out what your rights are. And you could feel really good about knowing that because so many people agree with you, your rights have been turned into laws and bylaws. For that loud stereo problem, for example, you can find out your rights on the Rotorua District Council website, on the Noise Control webpage.”
